Oh, what an eventful week! I will recount it for the sake of posterity. On Monday, I trawled Orchard with my darling Christine, fresh off the plane from Thailand, looking for a clutch to match the prom dress I had not decided on and makeup. I spent a hefty amount on makeup I did not even end up using on prom night, but some of it was pretty. I bought exorbitantly priced, but very lasting eyeshadow mousse and the loveliest lip gloss from Stila and a very, very useful Blot Powder from MAC which has performed particularly well the last few evenings that I have used it. I found a cheap, pretty white satin clutch that I've decided will match loads of things, and I was very pleased. In the evening, Chrissy Poo and I had dinner at Din Tai Fung (again!!!!) with Enning, and they came to my house to help me choose a prom dress. They chose my Stepford Wives-ish white dress that I bought in Vegas two years ago and have never really had the chance to wear. I also showed them the more interesting pieces from my dress collection, and I think they decided I have a very interesting dress collection indeed. I was particularly proud of a handmade fairytale flannel dress I got just that day. Christine thought it was from Marc Jacobs, haha.
I am slowly morphing into one of those boring blogs that repeatedly talks about shopping and going out with friends. But at this point it is all I'm doing, and since only the people I loveeee read this, its alright I suppose. :)
Tuesday was .. prom! We checked into a suite at the Ritz Carlton courtesy of my lovely dad and my lovely neighbours. Sam and Mandy went off for their appointments while Anushka and Sonia and I lazed around till we were due for our hair appointment, and I showed them my three dresses and had them help me decide as well. They picked my black Betsey Johnson, the original dress, although they were, I think, quite fond of the white BCBG and white Stepford Wives ones, only that they were less appropriate. Anushka's driver then arrived to drop us off at Nush's fabulous hairdresser, who did our hair in 20 minutes, to my constant amazement (and something I told EVERYONE about.) It was the first time I ever had my hair styled, and heftily discounted, much to my delight. With so much spare time on our hands, Sonia, Nush and I had tea at the Ritz, and I consumed the loveliest piece of warm cheesecake while Shamima and Bernie filtered in. We lazed around some more in the room until half past five and started getting ready. We were done relatively quickly, and waited around for Sam and Mandy to come back and for random people to leave their things in our room, which became a sort of mini holding area.
We were a rather brightly kitted bunch, Sam in a turqoise lace dress, Mandy in a red satin halter dress, Anushka in a fabulous chiffony, corseted and ruched red two-piece with black beaded embroidery, Bernie in a white satin piece with black mesh overlay and Sham in a shiny purplish-blue Punjabi outfit. I was probably the tamest, colour-wise, of them all, with my black lace dress over a maroon slip. It made for some lovely group pictures, and I think we mostly avoided the horror of becoming a cesspool of drab promwear. The food was alright, and there were some painful performances and some better ones throughout the night. Our arts faculty souvenir was suprisingly lovely, a silver pocket watch engraved with our abstract Arts logo, and an interesting hunk of metal to remember our 2 years by. :) So we did the usual, took pictures with bunches of people, although there were certaintly more people I could've taken shots with, I didn't have the time and my battery was running low.
Past midnight, we switched to our clubbing gear and headed off to Zouk, where we witnessed a number of boys get stupidly drunk and danced till our knees and feet ached. Two days later, my feet still hurt when walking on flat ground. Its quite preposterous. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my hair didn't stink of smoke and sweat, a usual product of clubbing I managed to dodge with all my hairspray.
I slept from about 5.30-7.30 in the morning on the edge of our fluffy bed and, unable to sleep any longer, headed down with Anushka for breakfast. We had such a great time just lounging around consuming our hearty breakfast, and then wandering around the pool area of the hotel talking for an hour or two. Intent on returning home to our beds to get good rest, we left sometime past nine in the morning. I slept for 3 hours, and got up to meet Eelin, Winnie and the twins in town for lunch. Lunch was brilliant apart from the fact that Eelin overslept and NEVER SHOWED UP, and we had to shout things repeatedly into the phone to Eelin regarding future going-out plans and penance for her tardiness (a free meal and a movie for us four). Bored with walking around Orchard Road, we came back to my house, and they saw the house for the first time! And got barked at by my disagreeable pair of daschunds. We spent a few hours lying on my bed laughing for no reason, watching Winnie help me wrap my expensive birthday present for my brother and applauding her efforts and listening to old Moffatts cds in an attempt to recount our 12 year old days as stupid teenyboppers. You know your friendships will last when your friends have seen you at the height of your teenybopper stupidity, which included liking Britney Spears and the Moffatts at some point of time in your life.
After my mom dropped them outside, I lazed around and got a long massage from Bernadette and fell asleep for a few minutes, then quickly ran around, bathed, blew out my hair, changed, put on my makeup and got ready in half an hour for Neil's 21st birthday dinner. We dined at a lovely new Mediterranean/Italian restaurant called Dolce Vita at the Oriental, and I ate a huge meal comprising half of my Dad's Mezzo, which is a gorgeous Middle Eastern appetizer, many many pieces of focaccia bread with their sundried tomato dip, pumpkin dip and herb butter, some of my mom's lobster bisque, Maine lobster and a Chocolate Domino as well as half my dad's Baked Valrhona chocolate soup, possibly the richest dessert I have come across yet. We took the obligatory photos, my mother pffted about the length (or lack of length) of my skirt and my brother impressed me with his metrosexuality by accurately explaining the logic behind my evening's outfit (which was, incidentally, a white mini skirt, a plain black top, huge turquoise disc earrings, towering turquoise heels, and my new white satin clutch). It was quite lovely. Also, I gave my brother his present wrapped in hot pink paper by Winnie Tan herself, which I hope he liked. I never know what to buy for most people except for Juliet, because I usually just buy her whatever I like and it seems to work.
Also : I don't usually receive or give Christmas presents, but I have a semi list!
1) Altec Lansing inMotion speakers for my iPod!
2) Ghost World Enid Doll. I want this so badly, you have no idea. I spent about 15 minutes telling Christine about how much I want this, I think.
3) Something from Sephora! I keep going to the website wondering whether I should buy something and have it sent to Juliet to carry back home for me. :)
4) Nice new jeans. Stretch flare Blue Cults in a dark wash, and I should try on some Miss Sixty's to figure out what I want.
5) Cds. Chrissy Poo might be getting me the Franz Ferdinand I've been wanting for what, 9 months. Also wanted : The Kinks Village Green Preservation Society, any Sufjan Stevens, Teenage Fanclub, The Libertines, Talking Heads, A.C. Newman's The Slow Wonder, Air, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Teitur. Or any new music. I'm out of touch with my faux-indie-hipster self.
6) Tan knee high Minnentonka boots. Size 8! Yes, here's to me being a trend whore. At least they are better than Uggs.
7) Dresses from Danger Dame. I'm particularly fond of the Pulp Fiction dress, the Red-hot Ring-a-ding dress, the 50s polka dot dress and the 50's pin up dress. Also, the garter panties! Har har.
I love making lists of things no one will get me. :)
